You pick the model and spec, pay a deposit to lock a build slot, and we source the truck (either from US factory order or from existing US stock). It then ships to Brisbane, gets fully RHD-converted and ADR-complied in our workshop, and is delivered to you ready to register. We handle import, conversion, compliance and pre-delivery in-house — you don't deal with shipping agents or compliance workshops separately.

What lead times should I expect?

Most builds run 4-8 months from deposit to handover, depending on the model, factory production slots in the US, shipping windows, and how loaded the conversion queue is when you order. Halo trucks like the F-150 Raptor R or Shelby Super Baja can be longer because US allocation itself is tight. We give you a realistic timeline at deposit — not a sales-brochure number.

How much deposit is required?

Accepted Answer

A holding deposit secures your build slot and the US-side sourcing. The exact figure depends on the model and how built-to-order it is — we confirm it in writing on your order. Deposits are held against the final invoice and the terms (refund conditions, build cancellation) are spelled out clearly before you pay anything.

Is the price a real drive-away figure?

Accepted Answer

Yes — we quote drive-away. That includes the truck, RHD conversion, ADR compliance, Queensland registration, CTP and stamp duty. If you add accessories (bull bar, tow setup, canopy, suspension, GVM upgrade) we line-item them so you can see exactly what each piece costs.

Question 5

Can I trade in my existing vehicle?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Send through your current vehicle's details and we'll come back with a trade figure. Most trade-ins are straightforward — utes, 4WDs, prestige and previous American trucks are all fair game. The trade value is netted against the new truck's drive-away.

Question 6

Can you arrange finance?

Accepted Answer

We work with brokers who specialise in heavy utes and imported / converted vehicles, including chattel mortgage and novated lease structures for ABN holders. Standard consumer car finance also works for most buyers. We'll introduce you — final approval is between you and the lender.

Question 7

Is GST included? Can I claim it back?

Accepted Answer

The drive-away price is GST-inclusive. If the truck is used predominantly for business and you're GST-registered, you can typically claim the GST back through your BAS, subject to the luxury car tax limit and your accountant's advice. We provide a full tax invoice with GST broken out.

Question 8

Do you sell to buyers outside Queensland?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We deliver Australia-wide. We handle interstate transport and we register the truck in your home state on handover, so you don't have to drive a freshly-built rig 1,500 km home if you don't want to. Plenty of our customers are NSW, VIC and WA-based.

Can I see the truck before I commit?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Come into the Brisbane workshop — we'll walk you through builds in progress, finished trucks ready for handover, and the conversion process itself. For interstate buyers we do video walkthroughs on demand. We'd rather you see it first than buy blind.

Question 10

What's the difference between a factory RHD RAM 1500 and your converted RAM 2500 / 3500?

Accepted Answer

Walkinshaw's factory RHD program covers the RAM 1500 only. The Heavy Duty trucks (2500, 3500, 5500) and the Ford F-Series, GMC Sierra and Chev Silverado lines are not factory RHD — every legitimately registered one in Australia has been converted by a workshop like ours. If you want HD payload and towing, conversion is the only path.

Question 11

What does "behind-dash RHD conversion" actually mean?

Accepted Answer

The truck arrives from the factory left-hand drive. We strip the front interior, fit a purpose-built RHD dash housing, relocate the steering rack, brake booster, pedal box, HVAC ducting and wiring harness to the right-hand side, then re-trim everything to factory finish. Done properly, when you sit in it you can't tell it wasn't born this way.

Is the conversion ADR-compliant and road-legal in every state?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every truck we deliver has been engineered to comply with Australian Design Rules and is certified by an approved compliance authority before registration. It's legal in every Australian state and territory, with full registration and CTP eligibility.

Question 13

Who actually issues the compliance plate?

Accepted Answer

Compliance is issued by a Registered Automotive Workshop / approved engineering signatory under the federal RVSA scheme, after the conversion is inspected against ADR requirements. We manage that process end-to-end, so the truck arrives at handover with its compliance documentation in place.

Do you keep the original dashboard or replace it?

Accepted Answer

We use a purpose-built RHD dash assembly designed to look and feel factory. The instrument cluster, screen, vents and switchgear all live where you'd expect — just mirrored to the driver's side. We don't Frankenstein the original LHD dash.

Are the airbags retained?

Accepted Answer

Yes — driver and passenger airbags, side curtains and seat-mounted airbags are retained and re-engineered into the RHD layout. The supplementary restraint system is tested as part of compliance.

Does the heating, A/C and demist still work properly?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The HVAC box, ducting and controls are re-routed to suit the RHD layout, and dual-zone climate, heated/cooled seats and rear vents are all retained. You shouldn't notice any difference in airflow versus a factory truck.

What factory features get lost in conversion?

Accepted Answer

Honest answer: very little on a properly engineered conversion. Adaptive cruise, lane-keep, blind-spot, 360 cameras, trailer brake controller, sunroof, premium audio and infotainment all carry over. If a specific feature can't be retained on a particular model, we tell you upfront before you order.

Can the truck ever be converted back to LHD?

Accepted Answer

Technically possible, practically pointless — it would be expensive, would invalidate the Australian compliance, and the truck couldn't be re-registered as LHD here unless it qualified under a separate import scheme. In short: don't buy one expecting to undo the conversion.

Question 19

How is the conversion engineered for safety?

Accepted Answer

The steering, braking and restraint changes are designed against the original OEM crash-load paths and signed off by a qualified automotive engineer before compliance is granted. We don't do “lipstick” conversions where the wheel is on the right but the engineering is half-baked.

Will the speedo, fuel gauge and warning lights all read correctly?

Accepted Answer

Yes — instrument cluster is reconfigured to metric (km/h, litres, °C) and warning telltales are translated to Australian ADR symbols where required. Trip computer, towing screens and infotainment are localised too.

What warranty does ATA provide on the truck and the conversion?

Accepted Answer

We provide a workshop warranty covering the conversion work itself (steering, dash, wiring, HVAC re-routing) and a separate vehicle warranty on the truck. Exact term, kilometre cap and what's covered is set out in writing on your sales contract — ask us for a copy of the warranty schedule before you pay your deposit.

Will fitting an aftermarket bull bar void my warranty?

Accepted Answer

A correctly engineered, ADR-compliant bull bar fitted by a qualified workshop should not void the factory drivetrain warranty. It can affect warranty on parts directly connected to it (parking sensors, airbag sensors, A/C condenser if relocated). If the bar is fitted incorrectly and causes damage, that damage isn't covered. Get the install done by someone competent.

Does a suspension lift void my warranty?

Accepted Answer

A modest, engineer-signed lift on quality components is generally fine for non-suspension warranty items, but suspension, driveline and steering components stressed by the lift may not be covered if a failure can be traced to the modification. Bigger lifts narrow your warranty position considerably. Talk to us before you go beyond a 2-inch lift.

Does a GVM upgrade void my warranty?

Accepted Answer

A second-stage manufacturer GVM upgrade re-rates the vehicle and the upgrade provider warrants the upgraded suspension and any axle/brake changes. Manufacturer warranty on items affected by the higher load (driveline, brakes, suspension mounts) can be reduced or transferred to the upgrader. We'll walk you through which warranty covers what before you sign off.

Does fitting a canopy or service body void my warranty?

Accepted Answer

A bolt-on canopy on factory tie-down points is generally low-risk for warranty. A chassis-mounted service body is a structural change and needs to be engineered — done badly it can stress the chassis and that damage won't be covered. We can fit and engineer the body during the build so it's done right the first time.

If ATA installs the accessory in your workshop during the build, does that change the warranty position?

Accepted Answer

In most cases yes — when we fit the accessory in-house using the right parts and engineering sign-off, we warrant both the install and the immediate surrounding components. It's a stronger warranty position than buying the truck and bolting the accessory on later somewhere else. We document exactly what we've covered on your handover paperwork.

Question 27

Where can I service the truck after handover?

You can service through our Brisbane workshop, through any of our nominated service partners around the country, or any competent diesel/heavy-ute mechanic — these are mechanically standard Ford, RAM, GMC and Chev drivetrains with parts readily available. Keep your servicing logbook stamped to keep your warranty valid.

Can a Ford / RAM / GM dealer service my truck?

Some will, some won't — it depends on the dealer and whether they're set up for HD American trucks. Routine servicing (oil, filters, brakes) is straightforward almost anywhere. For diagnostics or warranty-claim work, we'd generally rather you came back to us or our partners — we're tooled for these specific trucks.

Are spare parts easy to get in Australia?

Accepted Answer

Mechanical parts (filters, brakes, suspension, drivetrain) are well-supported through local distributors. Body parts and trim are often air-freighted from the US and arrive in days, not weeks. We hold common service parts in Brisbane for our customers.

Question 30

What happens if something on the conversion itself fails?

Accepted Answer

Bring it back. The conversion warranty covers the work we performed (steering linkages, dash assembly, RHD wiring harness, HVAC re-route). If it's a defect in our work, we fix it under warranty — that's the deal.

How much can these trucks actually tow in Australia?

Accepted Answer

On a 50mm ball: up to 4.5 tonnes braked is the typical legal limit per ADR. With a pintle hitch or gooseneck / fifth-wheeler, the HD trucks (F-350/450/550, RAM 2500/3500/5500) can legally pull 6-7+ tonnes. We'll spec the hitch to match what you actually want to tow.

What's the difference between braked and unbraked towing?

Accepted Answer

Unbraked = the trailer has no brakes of its own and is capped at 750 kg. Braked = the trailer has its own brakes (electric or hydraulic) wired to the tow vehicle. All of these trucks come with a factory integrated trailer brake controller, so you're running braked from day one.

Question 33

What do GVM, GCM, payload and tow ball mass mean?

GVM = max legal weight of the truck itself, fully loaded. GCM = max combined weight of truck + trailer. Payload = what you can put in / on the truck (people, gear, fuel, tow ball download). Tow ball mass = how much weight the trailer pushes down on the hitch (usually ~10% of trailer weight). All four numbers must be inside their limits, not just one.

Can I tow a 3.5 tonne caravan plus a horse float / boat behind it?

Accepted Answer

Towing two trailers (a “B-double” road train setup) is allowed in Australia in some states with the right licence and combination — but it is legally fiddly and needs proper engineering. Most owners tow one heavy thing at a time. If you want a true double-tow setup, talk to us about chassis spec, licence class and state rules first.

Do I need a heavy rigid (HR) truck licence to drive one of these?

Accepted Answer

If the truck's GVM is 4,500 kg or under, a standard car licence is fine. F-450, F-550, RAM 4500 and 5500, and any GVM-upgraded HD truck above 4,500 kg need a Light Rigid (LR) or Medium Rigid (MR) licence; over 8,000 kg GVM moves into Heavy Rigid (HR). We tell you up front which licence class your build will require.

Question 36

My RAM 1500 / F-150 is "overweight" with a caravan and full kit — why?

Accepted Answer

The half-ton trucks (RAM 1500, F-150) are big and capable but their payload is often only 700-900 kg. Add a full tank, four people, a canopy, drawers and 350 kg of tow-ball download from a heavy van and you can be over GVM before you leave the driveway. This is exactly why we steer caravan customers towards F-250/350 or RAM 2500/3500.

Is a weighbridge / corner-weight check worth doing?

Accepted Answer

Yes — strongly recommend it once your truck is loaded and hooked up to whatever you're towing. A four-pad weighing rig gives you front axle, rear axle, tow ball and trailer axle figures so you know you're legal. Cheap insurance against a roadside fine or a denied insurance claim after an incident.

Does the truck come with a trailer brake controller?

Accepted Answer

Yes — every model we sell has a factory integrated trailer brake controller built into the dash. No aftermarket box stuck under the steering wheel. It's wired to the truck's ABS so it brakes intelligently with the truck.

Will the GVM upgrade let me carry more in the tray?

Accepted Answer

Yes — a GVM upgrade re-rates the truck to a higher legal weight and gives you more payload headroom. Done before first registration (“pre-rego”) it's federally certified; done after rego (“post-rego”) it's state-based engineering. We can fit either during the build.

Diesel or petrol — which engine should I get?

For heavy towing or long-distance work, diesel (Cummins in RAM, Power Stroke in Ford, Duramax in GM) is the obvious answer — more torque, better economy under load, longer range. For lighter use or buyers who prefer the V8 sound and lower service complexity, the petrol options (HEMI, Hurricane I6, EcoBoost V6) make sense. What's the realistic fuel economy on a RAM 2500 Cummins?

Accepted Answer

Honest range: around 13-15 L/100km empty on the highway, 15-18 L/100km around town, and 17-22 L/100km towing 3+ tonnes depending on terrain and headwind. Anyone quoting you single-digit figures is either downhill with a tailwind or selling something.

What's the output of the latest 6.7L Cummins HO?

Accepted Answer

The current 6.7L Cummins High Output makes around 317 kW (430 hp) and 1,356 Nm (1,000 lb-ft) of torque in factory tune, paired to an Aisin heavy-duty automatic. The standard-output Cummins is detuned slightly and runs a different transmission. Final figures vary slightly by model year — we'll confirm exact numbers on your build.

Do these trucks use AdBlue / DEF?

Accepted Answer

Yes — modern diesel HD trucks (Cummins, Power Stroke, Duramax) use AdBlue (DEF) to meet emissions. Tank capacity gives you several thousand kilometres between top-ups. AdBlue is cheap and available at every truck stop, most servos and in 10L jerry cans from Bunnings / Repco.

How often do they need an oil change?

Diesel HD trucks: roughly every 12,000-15,000 km depending on duty cycle — heavy towing pulls the interval shorter. Petrol V8s: similar. Always go by the owner's manual and your towing duty, not just the dash reminder. We'll set up a service schedule with you at handover.

How big is the fuel tank? What's the touring range?

HD diesel models typically run 110-130L factory tanks, giving 600-900 km real-world touring range. Larger replacement tanks (150L+) are a popular accessory if you're doing remote work or outback travel. We can fit one as part of the build.

What does servicing typically cost?

A standard logbook service on a HD diesel runs in the same ballpark as a serviced LandCruiser 300 — it's not cheap, but it's not exotic-car money either. Major services (DPF, fuel filters, transmission service) cost more. We'll quote a service plan with the truck so there are no surprises.

How long does a Cummins / Power Stroke / Duramax actually last?

These engines are designed for US commercial use — 500,000+ km is common with proper servicing, and well-cared-for examples regularly clock 800,000+ km. Maintenance discipline (oil changes, fuel filter changes, not lugging cold) matters far more than which brand you pick.

Will it fit in a standard Australian garage?

Most standard Australian single garages (around 5.4-6m deep, 3m wide, 2.4-2.6m high) are tight on length and width. A crew cab F-250 or RAM 2500 is roughly 6.0-6.5m long and 2.0-2.1m wide at the body (wider with mirrors). Height is usually fine. Measure your garage carefully before you order, especially the door opening width.

Tight. Standard Australian carpark bays are 2.4-2.6m wide and around 5.4m long — a crew cab HD truck fills the bay and then some. Most owners park at the end of rows, in oversized bays, or use shopping centres with bigger spaces. It's manageable, just plan your stops.

Who insures these trucks in Australia?

A bunch of insurers cover RHD-converted American trucks — Shannons, CIL, MB Insurance and several brokers all play in this space. Mainstream insurers (NRMA, AAMI, RACQ, Youi) sometimes cover them too, depending on the model and conversion. Get two or three quotes — premiums vary a lot.

How does registration work in Queensland?

We register the truck in your name as part of handover, with full QLD plates, CTP and rego. Annual rego costs are higher than a small car (these are heavy vehicles) but in line with HD utes generally. Interstate buyers are registered in their home state — same process, just a freight leg in between.

A standard car (Class C) licence covers any of our trucks rated at 4,500 kg GVM or under, including most F-250 / RAM 2500 / Sierra 2500 / Silverado 2500 builds. F-450, F-550, RAM 4500, RAM 5500 and any post-rego GVM-upgraded build above 4,500 kg need at least an LR licence. We tell you up front which class applies.

Are these trucks hard to drive?

They're bigger than what you're used to, but they're easy to drive — power steering is light, the auto is smooth, visibility is excellent, and 360 cameras make parking surprisingly stress-free. Most customers tell us they're comfortable inside two weeks. Reversing into tight servo bays is the bit that takes practice.

Will it fit through standard McDonald's drive-thrus / car wash / underground carparks?

Accepted Answer

Drive-thrus: usually fine, mirrors might brush. Underground carparks: check the height clearance sign — most CBD parking is rated 2.0-2.1m and a HD truck is 2.04-2.07m, so it's tight or no-go. Touchless car washes generally work; cloth tunnels often have mirror or height limits.

What about fuel station bowsers — do they fit?

Diesel-side truck bays at most servos handle them comfortably. Tight inner-city petrol stations are the awkward ones — you'll learn which ones in your area work. AdBlue at the bowser is now common on truck-side pumps in Australia.

Resale value — do these trucks hold their money?

Accepted Answer

Honestly: yes, well — provided the conversion was done properly, it has a clean compliance and service history, and it hasn't been modified into oblivion. Properly-converted American HD trucks have held value strongly in the AU market for the last decade. A dodgy conversion will haunt resale, which is why how we build it matters.

I can buy a Hilux or Ranger for half the price — why import an F-250?

Accepted Answer

Because they're different tools. A Hilux / Ranger / Amarok tops out around 3.5 tonne braked towing and 1 tonne payload, and they're working hard at those numbers. An F-250 does 4.5 tonne all day, with double the payload, a torquier engine, a way bigger tray and a vastly more comfortable cabin on long trips. If you tow a 3+ tonne caravan, the F-250 is genuinely the right truck.

Isn't a 3.5 tonne tow rating enough?

Accepted Answer

On paper, yes. In reality, “3.5 tonne braked” on a mid-size ute usually means you're also at GCM and payload limits at the same time, with no margin. HD American trucks tow the same caravan with thousands of kilos of headroom, which means safer braking, less wear, and a calmer drive. Margin is the point.

Is the cabin really that much better?

Accepted Answer

Yes — these are full-size crew cabs designed for North American highway distances. Rear legroom is roughly limousine-class, the seats are wider and more supportive, the cabin is quieter, and long-haul fatigue is dramatically lower than a mid-size ute. Take one for a test drive and you'll feel it inside ten minutes.

Aren't parts and servicing harder than a Hilux?

Servicing is more involved than a Hilux but well-supported in Australia — RAM, Ford and GM HD drivetrains have strong parts availability, and we keep common parts in Brisbane. You won't walk into a country town's only servo and grab a new diff. You will get every standard service item without drama.

What about safety compared to a factory-RHD ute?

Modern HD American trucks ship with full ADAS suites — adaptive cruise, AEB, lane-keep, blind-spot, trailer sway control, 360 cameras — and the conversion retains them all. Crash performance is governed by ADR compliance. They're heavy vehicles, which has its own physics advantage, and they brake and steer well for their size.

Is the diesel emissions story cleaner on an American HD or an Aussie ute?

Modern HD American diesels (Cummins, Power Stroke, Duramax) all run DPF, SCR (AdBlue) and meet current US / EPA standards, which are broadly equivalent to Euro 6 / Australian ADR emissions targets. They're not as economical per km as a small ute, but per kilo of work done they're very efficient.

I want a Raptor R / TRX-style truck — what's the Aussie equivalent?

There genuinely isn't one. Ranger Raptor is a great mid-size performance ute but it's not in the same class as a 537kW supercharged V8 Raptor R or a Shelby Super Baja. If you want the halo American truck experience with Australian compliance and a proper warranty, that's exactly what we build.

Honest question — am I buying this for capability or for image?

Both is a fine answer. For some buyers it's pure capability (heavy van, horse float, remote work). For others it's presence and the cabin experience on long touring trips. We'll happily tell you if a Ranger or Amarok would do your job better and save you $80k — we'd rather you buy the right truck than the wrong one from us.
